The Sundström SR 900 is a reusable Air-Purifying Respirator (APR) half mask from Sundström Safety AB, designed for medium- to long-duration work in most industrial, construction, painting, welding, sanding, and cleanup environments. It emphasizes excellent fit, high protection, very low breathing resistance (thanks to dual exhalation valves), comfort, and compatibility with a full ecosystem of filters, PAPR (powered air-purifying), remote filters, and supplied-air systems. The mask body is made of soft, non-allergenic thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) and polypropylene (PP), with FDA/BGA-approved materials and pigments to minimize contact allergies. It is silicone-free in the main body (though valves use silicone membranes) and features a wide face seal, large crown plate, flexible single-strap head harness (easy to detach for cleaning), and covered exhalation valves that protect membranes from dust/paint mist.
Sizes and Weights
Available in three sizes for optimized fit (S, M, L):
- Small (S): ~132 g (order no. H01-3021 US / H01-3012 EU)
- Medium (M): ~136 g (H01-3121 US / H01-3112 EU)
- Large (L): ~138 g (H01-3221 US / H01-3212 EU)
Color: Grey. Operating temp: –10°C to +55°C (<90% RH). Storage: –20°C to +40°C (<90% RH).
Key Features
- Dual exhalation valves for extremely low exhalation resistance and reduced fatigue.
- Bayonet-style filter attachment (detachable for hoses/PAPR).
- Single inhalation valve + twin exhalation membranes (silicone).
- Wide, soft face seal for superior fit and seal.
- FDA/BGA food-contact approved materials (low allergy risk).
- Compatible with quantitative/qualitative fit testing.
- Can be used standalone (APR), with remote filter holder (SR 905 + hoses), SR 500/SR 700 PAPR fan units, or supplied-air (SR 307 regulator).
Approvals and Protection Factors
US/NIOSH (42 CFR Part 84):
TC-23C-3046 (SR 900 Half Mask with Chemical Cartridge APR) and related approvals (e.g., TC-23C-3047 variants).
Approved with specific Sundström chemical cartridges (e.g., OV SR 218, multi-gas) + P100 particulate filter (SR 510).
- Assigned Protection Factor (APF): Typically 10 for negative-pressure half-mask APR configurations (Maximum Use Concentration = 10× PEL/TWA; not for IDLH or <19.5% O₂).
- P100 filter: 99.97% efficient against all particulates.
Limitations (US NIOSH): Not for IDLH atmospheres, oxygen-deficient, abrasive blasting, structural firefighting, or unapproved contaminants. Replace cartridges on odor/taste/breakthrough; particulates on increased resistance. For formaldehyde, use gas-proof goggles.
Filter and Accessory Compatibility
The SR 900 accepts all Sundström non-threaded Class I/II filters via bayonet. Examples (US versions):
- Particulate: SR 510 P100 (H02-1321).
- Chemical Cartridges: SR 218 OV, SR 231 CL/HC/SD/FM, SR 232 OV/SD/CL/HC/HF, SR 229 AM/MA, etc.
- Combinations: Cartridge + snap-on P100 + optional pre-filter (SR 221) for nuisance dust.
- Remote/PAPR/SAR: SR 905 remote holder + SR 951 single or SR 952 twin hose; SR 500 PAPR (APF 50); SR 307 compressed air.
- Accessories: Pre-filter holder, storage bag/box, cleaning wipes (SR 5226), protective hoods (SR 64, SR 345), voice amplifier (SmallTalk), fit-test adapters, spark arrester, ID tags, service kits.
Spare parts: Head harness, filter attachment, gasket, valve flap kits, etc. (use only genuine Sundström).
Maintenance and Care
- Inspection: Before each use — check for cracks, tears, missing parts, proper filter seating, expiration dates (cartridges ~5 years unopened; P100 ~10 years).
- Cleaning: Warm soapy water (<40°C/104°F) or approved wipes/cleaner; disinfect with dilute bleach/iodine or 70% alcohol. Rinse, air dry. Never solvents.
- Replacement Schedule: Valves/membranes/harness/gasket annually or as needed. Filters per schedule or breakthrough.
- Storage: Clean, cool, dry, away from sunlight/contaminants; use provided bag or SR 230 box.
- Disassembly/Assembly: Removable filter holder (¼ turn), valves, harness, gasket — full exploded views in manuals.
Donning/Fit Check (Negative Pressure): Hold mask to face, pull harness over head, adjust straps, cover filter inlet and inhale — mask should collapse and hold seal. Positive pressure check optional. No beard/stubble that breaks seal.
